Homework will be set every Friday. There will be one maths and one English homework for the children to complete each week. We ask for these to be back in school by the following Wednesday.

Children who have not completed their homework or those who require support will be invited to complete their homework in school on Thursdays.

Children are also expected to read at home to an adult at least once a week.

Please see the Y5&6 statutory spelling list below which the children can also practise.

Our Learning Journey

We have had a busy and exciting Spring Term filled with lots of learning across the curriculum. The children have worked incredibly hard and enjoyed exploring a range of new topics and activities. Here is a snapshot of what we have been learning this term.

English

In English, we have been developing our writing skills using our class text The Nowhere Emporium. We have delved in to the magical wonders which the Nowhere Emporium brings.

We have started this term off by writing a variety of different texts. We have wrote a newspaper report about a mysterious disappearance, a setting description about the marvellous Emporium and even a descriptive narrative about different wonders.

 Maths

In Maths, we have focused on strengthening our fluency with the four main operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children have been applying these skills to a variety of calculations and problem-solving activities. We have also been exploring decimals, fractions and percentages in more depth, learning how to compare them, convert between them and use them in different contexts. We have developed our knowledge of Place Value by rounding numbers within 1,000,000. We will look at statistics and how we can find and compare information across different types of tables and charts.

Curriculum

In curriculum, we are learning about sustainability and how our choices affect the environment. We have explored different energy sources, including renewable energy like wind and solar, which can be replaced, and non-renewable energy like coal and oil, which are limited and harmful to the planet.

We have applied this knowledge by using maps to find the best location for a wind farm, considering factors such as wind speed, space, and nearby communities. This showed us that planning renewable energy projects requires careful decision-making.

We have also studied food miles by looking at packaging to see where food comes from. We learned that imported food travels long distances, increasing carbon emissions. However, countries import food due to climate, cost, and demand for variety.

Science

In science, we have been learning about the topic “life cycles.” We are exploring the different stages that living things go through as they grow and change, such as being born, growing, and becoming adults. We are looking at how animals and plants develop over time.

We have also learned about fertilisation, which is how new life begins. This is when a tiny cell from a male and a tiny cell from a female join together to start forming a new living thing. We explained this in a simple and respectful way to help us understand how living things reproduce.

Another important part of our learning was understanding what makes something living. We used the acronym MRS GREN to help us remember the seven life processes: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, and Nutrition. These are the things that all living organisms do.

Young Carers

This term we have also spent time learning about Young Carers. The children discussed what a young carer is and how some children may help look after family members at home. We talked about the importance of kindness, understanding and supporting one another, and the class explored ways we can make sure everyone feels included and supported in our school community.
