Our Learning Journey

Below you will find out about our learning journey this term.

Please click on any document links for extra learning.

English

Would you like to know how to preserve a body with the mummification process?

Our week on instructional writing will delve into the gory details!

We will explore command sentences and the use of time adverbials whilst writing our own set of instructions.

Year 3 will be exploring this and many other Ancient Egyptian themes during our Writing lessons.

The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo (1992-02-01)In English this half term, we are reading The Egyptian Cinderella written by Shirley Climo and illustrated by Ruth Heller. We have been focusing on some new skills within our extended pieces of writing (Star Writes) and some new skills which we haven't previously used. Take a look below at the skills we will be using when focusing on this book:

  • Fronted adverbials
  • Co ordinating conjunctions
  • Adverbs
  • Subordinating conjunctions
  • Using show don't tell
  • Questions
  • Similes and metaphors

Below are some pictures of our latest Star Write; a character description of The Egyptian Cinderella. We loved writing these as we were able to describe her appearance and her personality.

Maths

In Maths this half term, we have lots of concrete learning. It has been a great way for us to start a new topic and understand what we are doing before we move onto Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving questions. We have covered the following topics this half term:

  • Geometry (perimeter)
  • Measure (length, mass and capacity)

We have working really hard on our times tables in Year 3 and have been flying through our Number Club challenges. We focus on a new times table every week, which we chant, repeat, sing and even try to count them backwards.

Curriculum: What was important to the Ancient Egyptians?

Year 3 are focusing on the topic of ancient Egypt this term.

We will learn how the Egyptians lived long ago and what they believed helped them live happy and successful lives. Religion was very important to them and they worshipped many different gods who they believed controlled nature and everyday life. The Ancient Egyptians also cared greatly about the afterlife and believed their souls would live on which is why they built grand pyramids. The River Nile was another important part of their lives as it provided water for drinking, farming and travel. By learning about these ideas, we can understand why the Ancient Egyptians built amazing monuments and created a fascinating civilisation that is still remembered today.

On Thursday 12th March, Year 3 went to Cadbury World on their school trip. We have been learning all about the rainforests and focusing on The Maya. We started our journey with an educational lesson all about The Maya and why they are so important.

After, we went inside the Cadbury World factory and started our tour in the rainforest. We had great fun looking around and reading all of the important information. We had a great time learning how to write our name in melted chocolate and having a go at tempering it. We enjoyed the rides we went on which took us on a journey of collecting cocoa beans and not to forget the 4D cinema at the end of our day! Thank you Cadbury World for a great day of fun, information and of course, chocolate!

Science How do rocks teach us about the past?

Science this half term is going to rock!

In this science topic, we will learn about rocks, soils and fossils and discover how rocks teach us about the past. We will compare and group different rocks by looking closely at their appearance and properties, such as colour and texture. Through simple tests, we will investigate what rocks are like and identify different rock types. We will also learn how fossils are formed and how they give us clues about living things from long ago. As part of this unit, we will discover that soil is made from tiny pieces of rock mixed with organic matter, such as plants and animals. We will develop our scientific skills by carefully observing rocks, using classification skills to group them, and recording our findings using labelled drawings. By the end of this topic, we will understand how rocks help scientists learn more about the Earth’s history.

Staying Safe: Reviewing the PANTS Rule

On Friday 13th March, we learnt about how to keep ourselves safe and understand a very important rule: The PANTS rule.

We had a whole school assembly focusing on how we keep our private parts safe and understanding that they belong to us.

Our PSHE lesson this week has been focusing on discussing sharing secrets that we worry about, understanding our private parts belong to us and who we can discuss things with.

 PSHE

Year 3 have had a visit from Kate and Harold at SCARF this half term, where we were focusing on our mental health and well-being. We particularly focused on how to keep our brains healthy and Harold helped us with lots of ideas.

R.E. How and why are Holy Books important?

Design and Technology

This half term, our learning started with us making researching, planning, making and evaluating our fruit skewers. We had so much fun taste testing the fruit and even the chocolate! Then, we had to think about what fruits we wanted on our skewers to make a delicious skewer for us to eat. Take a look at some of our pictures below.

This is me

Year 3 are really enjoying "This is me." A chance for us all to share something special with classmates. Something which our friends may not know about us.

So far we have had...

A budding entrepreneur who has set up her own business selling squishies on the internet.

A talented sports man, involved in lots of different sports outside school.

A superstar fitness expert, involved in Parkrun every week, running in special events to raise money for charity and competing in the first ever Hyrox Youngstars in the UK!
